SSEER is a response mechanism defined by a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. This agreement enables DEM to quickly activate resources primarily affiliated with the University of Rhode Island in the event of an environmental emergency.
SSEER assists in the assessment, reduction, or remediation of threats to public health and safety and the environment. Our partnership with DEM improves environmental emergency preparedness, response, and recovery in Rhode Island.
Accordingly, the Coastal Institute maintains a robust roster of university and statewide expertise and resources that could be deployed to assist the state in responding to an environmental emergency. Each summer, the CI provides a training workshop in preparation for the hurricane season, and also hosts complementary lectures and workshops throughout the year.
