This project is best administered by the Coastal Institute due to its expertise in translating scientific findings into knowledge that is useful for stakeholders. Cold seeps are increasingly acknowledged to be prevalent along coastal margins, including New England, and likely have important links to coastal productivity and biogeochemical cycling. Furthermore, given increasing anthropogenic impacts through seabed mining and oil/gas extraction, more knowledge about the ecology of cold seep species will be essential to develop efficient mitigation strategies for the protection of these unique ecosystems.
