Provide a short paragraph stating why the project is best administered by the Coastal Institute.

This proposal examines diatoms, a group of organisms that are critical to the functioning of coastal ecosystems. One group of diatoms contains symbiotic nitrogen fixers, essentially allowing diatom to uncoupled their growth from ambient nitrate concentrations- a unique ability for phytoplankton. It is generally assumed that these organisms are important only in tropical and subtropical waters but new research shows that they can be abundant in coastal areas such as the Jersey coast and here on the NE shelf. Because of the coastal impact of theses organisms, we think the CI is the best place for the administration of this project.
