Fishing is an example of an exact moment when humans and ecosystems come together, two things I care deeply about, so my research focuses on understanding fishing itself as well as its ecological and social impacts and drivers. I then use the information from my and others research to direct interventions that protect and improve ecosystem health while imposing the least short-term sacrifice on fishers as possible. I work mainly in developing countries where the viability of and disruption to livelihoods is particularly important.

Skills that I apply to my work include developing collaborative applied research programs, data analysis, systems thinking and decision making, and experience in fisheries management.
