I am most interested in understanding and quantifying the biological rate processes of zooplankton, including feeding, growth, and reproduction, that determine their role and importance in marine ecosystems. In trying to understand these processes, I have incorporated into my research both controlled laboratory studies and field experiments conducted under natural conditions. My research spans temperate to Arctic regions and estuarine to open ocean environments. Recently, I have focused my research on three major topic areas in the coastal environment: 1) zooplankton production on Georges Bank / Gulf of Maine, 2) the role of zooplankton grazers in harmful algal bloom (HAB) dynamics, and 3) the ecology of Arctic Ocean zooplankton in coastal and shelf systems.
