I am currently the Technical Advisor to Sea Sense, a Tanzanian NGO, which focuses on community-led conservation and management of marine and coastal resources. My work in Tanzania over the past 15 years has turned my interests towards the human dimensions of the coastal environment. I am particularly interested in diverse human-ocean relationships, especially those that lead to marine stewardship actions.

My doctoral research explores human-ocean relationships in the context of participation in and support for community-led marine conservation. I focus on environmental values, individual and collective identities, and place dependency as a way of understanding how and why individuals and communities cooperate to conserve coastal and marine biodiversity.
