I am interested in understanding the role that food web architecture plays in the structure, function and resilience of past and present coastal ecosystems. I develop and apply cutting edge molecular isotope tools to explore the sources and cycling of organic matter in coastal marine ecosystems. I am particularly interested in understanding how human-environment interactions alter food web architecture, be it directly (e.g., extractive fishing), indirectly (e.g., eutrophication), or through rapid climate change. By quantifying the influence of food web architecture on coastal ecosystem function, my research looks to provide the scientific basis for the conservation and sustainable management of coastal ecosystems.
