Biography

Justin Sankey is a Ph.D. student in Chemical Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. Their research examines PFAS contamination in coastal ecosystems, with a focus on the sorption behavior of PFAS and the development of effective sorbent materials for water remediation. Justin leads multi-partner sampling efforts in estuaries across New England and collaborates closely with community and industry partners, including kelp farmers in southern Rhode Island and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, to assess PFAS impacts on aquaculture and culturally significant coastal species. They combine fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and applied environmental chemistry to advance practical approaches for PFAS monitoring and mitigation. Justin is committed to mentoring students, strengthening partnerships, and contributing science that supports resilient and equitable coastal futures.
