- Block Island Coastal Resilience Committee
Judy Gray retired from NOAA in 2011 after a 33-year career as a research meteorologist. Judy started with NOAA as a commissioned officer with the NOAA Corps. Her civilian career began at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle researching winds along the mountainous coastlines of Alaska on NOAA ships and aircraft as part of Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI). During the 1990s, she served as the Acting Deputy Director of NOAA’s 12 Environmental Research Laboratories and was the NOAA Program Manager for both the Coastal Forecast System and Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics (GLOBEC). Judy was the Deputy Director of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami from 1998-2010 and ended her full-time career as Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator for NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Programs and Administration. She has served on the Florida and National Sea Grant Advisory Boards and is currently a member of the Rhode Island Sea Grant Advisory Council. In retirement, Judy is the founding chair of the Block Island Coastal Resilience Committee and an Emeritus Board Member of the Block Island Maritime Institute. Judy has dedicated her professional career and volunteer activities to improving our knowledge of coastal processes. Her association with the Coastal Institute is a wonderful opportunity to apply decades of experience to the challenges of coastal Rhode Island.
