I am a molecular ecologist interested in the intersection of genomics, stoichiometry, and biological infrastructure. My focal study organisms are freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae). Freshwater mussels are some of the most imperiled North American taxa, despite their important role in nutrient cycling and biofiltration in aquatic ecosystems. I study how species biodiversity in freshwater mussel communities relates to ecosystem function, and how we can leverage genomic tools to select for freshwater mussel phenotypes that convey the greatest output of ecosystem services. Together with the Coastal Institute, I believe we can work to sustainably manage the freshwater mussel populations of Rhode Island for years to come.
