Biography

Dr. Catherine (“Catie”) Alves is a marine ecologist, social scientist, and environmental advocate. As the South County Coastkeeper with Save The Bay, she works to protect and restore Rhode Island’s coastal waters, focusing on water quality monitoring, community action, and public advocacy.

She is a National Geographic Explorer, co-founder of the Northeast Climate-Resilience Fisheries Network, and a 2022 Fellow of the New Leaders Council Rhode Island. Her research integrates social and ecological sciences to improve marine management and policy.

Dr. Alves earned her Ph.D. in ecology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her B.A. in biology from Connecticut College. She enjoys paddleboarding, kayaking, and hiking in her free time.
