Biography
Bryan Plankenhorn (they/them) is a PhD candidate in Biological Oceanography and a Master’s student in Marine Affairs through the Dual Degree Program at the University of Rhode Island. Their doctoral research focuses on the harmful algal bloom species Pseudo-nitzschia, which produces domoic acid, a neurotoxin that causes Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning. Bryan is investigating the environmental stressors influencing toxin production through transcriptomic analyses. For their Master’s research, Bryan is exploring how Indigenous forms of value can be integrated into contemporary marine resource management systems. They are particularly interested in aligning research with the priorities of their tribal community, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe. Bryan’s future career goals include establishing a career in academia to advance research in marine science while inspiring Indigenous students to pursue STEM fields. As an Emerging Coastal Leader, Bryan is committed to fostering collaboration and supporting sustainable marine resource management that honors Indigenous knowledge and sovereignty.
