* Environmental Data Center (EDC) Update and repair of critical wiring was funded by the Coastal Institute. The EDC hosts important data for scientific research, the RI Geographic Information System, and the National Parks Service, which could have been rendered inoperable if the repairs were not expeditiously completed.
* The Coastal Institute provided substantial financial and organizational support of the 50th Anniversary of the Graduate School of Oceanography. This two-day celebration in June 2011 was further commemorated through an associated video that was written and produced by the Coastal Institute Director.
* GreenFins LLC, a proposed public-private partnership with the University of Rhode Island, was assessed by an ad-hoc review committee that was organized and chaired by the Coastal Institute Director. This committee assessed the feasibility of the proposal and considered constraints and options at each phase of development. A summary report was provided to the University of Rhode Island Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Graduate School of Oceanography Dean to assist in their decision-making process.
The Director and Assistant Director of the Coastal Institute provide formal classroom instruction and supplemental training opportunities. They develop and teach courses that weave together coastal concerns with social equity concerns and communication skill development. The Coastal Institute also offers training to faculty and students to improve both written and oral communication skills; effective communication can enhance presentations and research, promote productive discussions of research, and reflect positively on the university.
