I am a practicing sculptor, gardener and sailor. I envelop myself in a world of thought provoking environments, study, and inspiring experiences.
I earned my BFA in sculpture at the University of South Carolina, and my Masters from RISD.
I carve life-size alabaster, marble, agate, and limestone figures of women and their environments, either real or imagined, often including fibonacci spirals to depict movements of water and air. I work from my 19th century sculpture studio, set in a riverside mill.
I exhibit in museums and galleries throughout the United States, in New York City, Boston, Providence, Newport, New Bedford, Indianapolis, and Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina.
Inspiration comes from close observation, studies of bioluminescence, biodiversity, ocean ecosystems, and participating in the local opportunities to be a conscious steward of the earth, such as the annual Horseshoe Crab tagging event through the RI Department of Environmental Management. I'm obsessed with the ctenophores we see at East Beach.
I see myself contributing to the Coastal Institute through collaborations with GSO scientists through Synergy by learning about their research, and creating sculpture based on that relationship.
During this year's session, I was very fortunate to be paired with Veronica Berounsky and learn about the Overturn by helping to take water samples of the Narrow River. Through our discussions, and touring the GSO facilities, I was inspired to create two sculptures, and start the process on a third. Two of these works will be on display at GSO in September. In short, my contribution is to physically interpret concepts and ideas inspired by scientific research, in a dynamic, creative, and artistic way.
