URI Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (URI NEMO for short)is a Cooperative Extension Water Quality Program providing training, watershed assessment tools and technical support for local officials who make land use decisions. Since 1993 we have been working with volunteer board, council and commission members. In cooperation with the URI Environmental Data Center we work with local officials in applying Geographic Information System-based tools to evaluate environmental impacts of changing land use and select effective management practices. Our work has focused in developing communities of the Narragansett Bay, Pawcatuck and Coastal Pond watersheds. Current projects include: a partnership with RI Health in conducting community-based watershed assessments of major water supply wellheads and reservoirs throughout the state; and technical support to communities establishing wastewater management programs. In this work maintenance of natural stream hydrology and pollution source reduction are two key issues that directly affect sensitive coastal habitat or involve cumulative impacts to downstream coastal waters.
