My interests lie in promoting the nexus between commercial fisheries, local seafood, and thriving marine habitats and food webs. For me, the harvest of marine resources for food and livelihood is a powerful connection to the environment that stands to be lost in an era of increasing development, imported seafood, and indoor jobs. My work supports access and capacity building for young fishermen, integration of wild seafood into local food systems, and resilience of the socio-ecological fisheries system in the face of environmental uncertainty. I am the founder and board president of the nonprofit Eating with the Ecosystem, which aims to apply an ecosystem-based lens to the integration of seafood into local markets, and I am the spark behind the project Resilient Fisheries RI, an informal network of commercial fishermen working to build a resilience strategy for empowering our fisheries in an era of environmental change.
