My research focuses on the impact of human activities on coastal ecosystems. To that end - we study ecological and biogeochemical processes across the land-ocean continuum. For example, current research includes understanding the role of altered precipitation on salt marsh greenhouse gas emissions, the effects of low oxygen conditions on sediment biogeochemical processes, the role of oyster aquaculture in changing coastal nitrogen cycling, and the role of urban environments on nutrient fluxes. We also have a long-term study of benthic fluxes in Narragansett Bay - 12 years and counting! This is a rare data set to be collecting and, in fact, we know of only one other that is longer.
