The Coastal Institute does not reside within a single college or department at the University of Rhode Island, but serves as a transdisciplinary venture that encompasses a variety of interests both in academia and beyond. Because of this, the Coastal Institute retains a neutral stance with regard to research and the application of regulations so long as the path forward protects our oceans, coastal and upland communities.

Fluke Fishery: a series of symposia held in 2012 and 2013 in support of the RI Department of Environmental Management and the RI commercial fishing community to provide long-term sustainable harvest opportunities of the summer flounder (fluke) fishery.

Recreational Fisheries: a symposium focused on developing reliable methods for recreational fishing data collection.

GreenFins, LLC: a scientific review of the feasibility of a private-public partnership to research and raise yellow fin and blue fin tuna between GreenFins, LLC and the URI Graduate School of Oceanography; recommendations were presented to the Provost of URI and the Deans of the Graduate School of Oceanography and the College of Environment and Life Sciences.
