* Coastal Institute Integrated Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Project (CIIP) was funded through a five year, $3.2 million National Science Foundation competitive grant to promote interdisciplinary graduate education for coastal and estuarine science. CIIP supported 23 PhD level graduate students [link to the CIIP pages of students] from the College of Environment and Life Sciences: Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Sciences, Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, and Marine Affairs; the College of Business; and the Graduate School of Oceanography. The lessons learned and certain curriculum aspects from CIIP have been permanently integrated into the University of Rhode Island culture of graduate education.

A RI Council for the Humanities Mini-Grant was awarded to the Coastal Institute to support the writing and promoting of an eco-history of shellfish in Narragansett Bay, which will supplement the RI Shellfish Management Plan.
